Andrew Nicholson has been selected as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his dedication to the equestrian sport, in the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
The New Zealand Order of Merit was established in 1996 by royal warrant and Elizabeth II, Queen of New Zealand. The award is eligible to any citizen of Commonwealth realms, who show meritorious services to the crown and the nation or who have become distinguished by their eminence, talents, contributions, or other merits.
Andrew’s success and passion for representing his country makes him an ideal candidate. The New Zealand born, English based rider has represented New Zealand for 30 years now, and has competed in six Olympic Games in the eventing discipline. Andrew Nicholson’s dedication and passion for the sport made him, along with Mark Todd the first New Zealanders to have competed at six Olympic Games.
Nicholson suffered a broken neck as a result of a fall at the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe in Gloucestershire in 2015. Nicholson returned to riding when he was fit again, with him having no desire to give up just yet.
Nicholson’s most notable collection of individual results would have been from his attendance at Burghley Horse Trials, with Nicholson winning five times, between 1995 and 2014, winning three consecutive times from 2012 on Avebury.
Congratulations to a very deserving Andrew Nicholson!
