We need to look at feeding and maintaining our old trusted friends over winter. This is extremely important, as winter in the colder parts of Australia can be quite difficult for older horses if we are not prepared.

Like humans, as horses get older their ability to digest feed diminishes. As their teeth erode and elongate their ability to chew and assist with digestion is also reduced. Key selection of feeds for mature horses needs to be considered to enable them to still flourish.

The key message for caring for you older horse is to monitor them every week or so. Take their rugs off and check their condition. If they have changed, make the adjustment to their diet or their environment. It is a lot easier to maintain condition than it is to build back condition of your horse. We want our mature horses to thrive, so we need to ensure our beloved older horses maintain their health and condition all year round.

Barastoc Senior is a balanced feed for mature horses, designed to help them maintain condition. Barastoc Senior pellets easily soften with water, turning into a soft mash, making them suitable for horses with poor dental health, and they are made using cooked cereal grains and fibre sources for improved digestibility and palatability in older horses.  Barastoc Senior is a balanced feed, reducing the need for added supplementation in healthy horses and includes Diamond V® XPC yeast culture, proven to improve intestinal function and therefore nutrient absorption. Another key ingredient is natural Vitamin E, proven to be 5 times more absorbent than synthetic forms. The combination of the right protein level and the inclusion of Kentucky Equine Research Vitamin & Mineral premix, ensures a complete balanced feed, made by an Australian owned company.
