In Australia, many horses celebrate their birthdays on the first day of August each year.
All thoroughbreds have the same birthday so that their ages can be standardised for comparison for racing; in the Northern hemisphere this is January 1 and in the Southern hemisphere it’s August 1.
However, the date often extends beyond racing with many owners celebrating their non-thoroughbred horses’ birthdays today – there are sure to be plenty of carrots on offer for Australia’s equine community today!
